The essay can start with one rough sentence.

A blank page can make the whole assignment feel like one enormous decision. Your first job can be much smaller: open the document and put something imperfect on it.

I need to…

Separate starting from writing well

You might be trying to choose an argument, remember the readings, find a structure, and sound convincing—all before typing anything. Give those jobs different turns.

Try this rough sentence: “This essay is about ___, and one thing I want to understand is ___.”

It does not have to become your introduction. It only has to give you something to respond to.

If that is still too much

Choose one action, not all three. If you genuinely do not understand the assignment, your next useful step may be writing a question for your teacher or tutor.

For the next five minutes

Write a few fragments beneath your rough sentence: one example, one question, or one point from your notes. Leave placeholders for references you need to check. Avoid treating a polished introduction as the entry fee for beginning.

When the timer ends

Before you stop, write a short note such as “Next: find the paragraph about housing costs.” A specific return point can save you from facing the same blank-page decision later.

Take a smaller start with you.
